A rotten system feeds the climate crisis. The party is over, yet we keep dancing on the edge.
In Thomas Köck’s new version of Sophocles’ “King Oedipus”, the question of knowledge and sight lies at the heart of the adaptation. The blindness (τύφλωσις) of those in power is self-imposed. Köck relocates the ancient myth to a world permeated by capitalism, whose plague we ourselves are. Temperatures are rising, yet the party goes on. Pythias’ call—to give nature a voice—is ignored by those in power. Despite Jocasta’s bitter realization—that we ourselves are the disease—the law ultimately prevails, immutable and unyielding. They cling to what they know. Creon exiles the guilty and restores Thebes to the old order, “forever back to our good old normal.”
"This evening, under Maike Bouschen’s direction, becomes great theater not because it admonishes or appeals, but because it makes its audience shudder in front of themselves. (...) Capitalism devours our emotions. That is the real tragedy of our time." Johannes Bruggaier, SÜDKURIER
"She stages 'forecast: Oedipus' as a pop-techno revue and dramatic chamber play, with hints of morally weighty discourse theater. Her four actresses and four actors master the shift from casual irony to Sophoclean depth." Julia Nehmiz, NACHTKRITIK
